This verse from the "Letter to the Hebrews" in the Bible is true. Christ is alive and well. Yet our relationship with him is frequently an abstract one. The purpose of this book is to help you meditate on Christ in his Word—to learn of Christ as if for the first time, in the here and now. This way Christ will become the center of your life.
"Jesus," "Jesus a Christ" the discovery of Paul and "Jesus the Christ" constructed by the Church Fathers are distinct theological entities. The New Testament makes sense only if the differences are clarified.
I’m learning German. First I was using a program called “Before You Know It”. In this program when they taught you words, for example, cat was die Katze, dog was der Hund. Now I am using Rosetta Stone and Cat is eine Katze and dog is ein Hund. What is the difference? Is one of them incorrect? My guess is that ein means “a” and die or der means “the”. Am I right? When is it correct to use each of these? Is it “Wo ist der Hund?” OR “Wo ist ein Hund?”
Also, I’m trying to teach my son. So when I point so something, do I always have to say ein, die, der, or das? Can i just say the word? Or is that inproper or incorrect?
Your guesses are corect. Ein/eine = a(n); der/die/das = the. They are used almost as they are in English. If your son is a baby, I would say “Katze” and point to the cat or picture of a cat. If he’s older, I’d say “Das is eine Katze” or “Die Katze ist grau” when I point to it.
BTW, there is a cute book for kids called The First 1000 Words in German (Amery and Cartwright) that has brightly-colored illustrations organized by themes (weather, birthday party, etc.) with vocabulary labeled and a rough pronunciation guide. I think you’d both like it!

In recent years, methodology debates in the social sciences have increasingly focussed on issues relating to epistemology. Realism and Sociology makes an original contribution to the debate.
This book draws together a distinguished group of philosophers and theologians to present new thinking on realism and religion. The religious realism/antirealism debate concerns the questions of God's independence from human beings, the nature of religious truth and our access to religious truths. Although both philosophers and theologians have written on these subjects, there has been little sustained investigation into these issues akin to that found in comparable areas of research such as ethics or the philosophy of science. The contributors present a variety of contrasting positions on key issues in the religious realism debate. This volume of original essays will both introduce newcomers to the field and suggest new lines of research for those already familiar with it.
This book presents a clear formulation and addresse a the major arguments for scientific realism. Sankey appeals to philosophers beyond the community of, typically Anglo-American, analytic philosophers of science to appreciate and understand the doctrine. The book emphasizes the epistemological aspects of scientific realism and contains an original solution to the problem of induction that rests on an appeal to the principle of uniformity of nature.

World Cinema and the Ethics of Realism is a highly original study. Traditional views of cinematic realism usually draw on the so-called classical cinema and its allegiance to narrative mimesis, but Nagib challenges this, drawing instead on the filmmaker's commitment to truth and to the film medium's material bond with the real. Starting from the premise that world cinema's creative peaks are governed by an ethics of realism, Nagib conducts comparative case studies picked from world new waves, such as the Japanese New Wave, the French nouvelle vague, the Cinema Novo, the New German Cinema, the Russo-Cuban Revolutionary Cinema, the Portuguese self-performing auteur and the Inuit Indigenous Cinema. In all cases, making films is making history, entailing change in the real life of casts and crews, and therefore producing, rather than reproducing, reality. Drawing upon Badiou and Rancière, World Cinema and the Ethics of Realism revisits and reformulates several fundamental concepts in film studies, such as illusionism, identification, apparatus, alienation effects, presentation and representation. Its groundbreaking scholarship takes film theory in a bold new direction.
"Socialist Realism without Shores" offers an international perspective on the aesthetics of socialist realism–an aesthetic that, contrary to expectations, survived the death of its originators and the demise of its original domain. This expanded edition of a special issue of the "South Atlantic Quarterly" brings together scholars from various parts of the globe to discuss socialist realism as it appears across genres in art, architecture, film, and literature and across geographic divides–from the "center," Russia, to various points at the "periphery"–China, Germany, France, Poland, remote republics of the former USSR, and the United States. The contributors here argue that socialist realism has never been a monolithic art form. Essays demonstrate, among other things, that its literature could accommodate psychoanalytic criticism; that its art and architecture could affect the aesthetic dictates of Moscow that made "Soviet" art paradoxically heterogeneous; and that its aesthetics could accommodate both high art and crafted kitsch. "Socialist Realism without Shores" also addresses the critical discourse provoked by socialist realism–Stalinist aesthetics, "anthropological" readings; ideology critique and censorship; and the sublimely ironic approaches adapted from "sots art, " the Soviet version of postmodernism. Religion, Realism and Social Change challenges those contemporary sociologists who argue that the notion of ‘society’ is an outmoded basis for sociological analysis and instead revitalizes the idea that sociology is truly ‘the study of society’. Through a bold and original argument, Philip Mellor returns the human and religious aspects of social life to the centre of social theory, drawing on a vast range of contemporary social theoretical literature in the process.
In his writings, Hume talks of our 'gilding and staining' natural objects, and of the mind's propensity to 'spread itself' on the world. This has led commentators to use the metaphor of 'projection' in connection with his philosophy: Hume is held to have taught that causal power and self are projections, that God is a projection of our fear, and that value is a projection of sentiment. By considering what it is about Hume's writing that occasions this metaphor, P. J. E. Kailspells out its meaning, the role it plays in Hume's work, and examines how, if at all, what sounds 'projective' in Hume can be reconciled with what sounds 'realist'. In addition to offering some highly original readings of Hume's central ideas, Projection and Realism in Hume's Philosophy offers adetailed examination of the notion of projection and the problems it faces.
In this important book, Drew Khlentzos explains the antirealist argument from a realist perspective. He defends naturalistic realism against the antirealist challenge, and he considers the consequences of his defense for our understanding of realism and truth. Khlentzos argues that the naturalistic realist view that the world exists independently of the mind must take into consideration what he calls the representation problem: if the naturalistic realist view is true, how can mental representation of the world be explained? He examines this major antirealist challenge in detail and shows that many realists have dismissed it because they have not understood its nature. He sees it as a philosophical puzzle: the antirealist challenge, if sound, does not prove that there are no objects that exist independently of the mind, but that there is no rational basis for thinking that there are; we have good reason to believe in the naturalistic view, but (given the antirealist arguments) we have no way of knowing how it could be true. Khlentzos surveys the antirealist arguments of Michael Dummett, Hilary Putnam, and Crispin Wright and suggests a realist answer. He argues for a radically nonepistemic conception of truth, and against pragmatist, intuitionist, verificationist, and pluralist alternatives. He examines and rejects some current versions of physicalism and functionalism, and offers an original version of the correspondence theory of truth. This book explores all aspects of an important scholarly debate that has widespread implications for the political world, including the making of foreign policy–i.e., a debate over whether the contemporary theory of the balance of power as presented by Kenneth Waltz is a scientifically acceptable theory. It allows readers to examine and analyze the different views (in their original form) by all those in the debate and to come to their own conclusions. An Introduction gives an overview of the debate, defines and clarifies in simple language some of the major concepts used in philosophy of science, sets the historical context of the debate, and explains why it is important for both international relations theory and foreign policy making. An editorial commentary for each article highlights areas of agreement and disagreement with the other authors. First presents the original articles in the initial debate with responses from several of the leading international relations theorists in the field–Kenneth Waltz, Thomas Christensen, Jack Snyder, Colin Elman, Miriam Fendius Elman, Randall Schweller, and Stephen Walt. Then features response from scholars who take differing methodological approaches and who have disparate views on realism and balancing of power (e.g., Jack S. Levy, Paul W. Schroeder, Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, Zeev Maoz, Richard Rosecrance, Charles L. Glaser, William C. Wohlforth, Michael Barnett). For anyone interested in the philosophical underpinnings of international relations.
This book outlines the realist and pluralist philosophy of John Anderson, Australia’s most original thinker, whose articles and teaching at Sydney University have deeply influenced Australian intellectual life. Several main themes run though his work, but Anderson never gave an overall account of his views. This is remedied here: in exhibiting the range of Anderson’s thought, from logic, epistemology and theory of mind, to language and social theory, Baker’s work sketches realism as a systematic philosophical position and shows something of the history of ideas in Australia. This book will be of particular interest to historians of modern philosophy and those studying realism.
In recent years, methodological debates in the social sciences have increasingly focused on issues relating to epistemology. Realism and Sociology makes an original contribution to the debate, charting a middle ground between postmodernism and positivism.Critics often hold that realism tries to assume some definitive account of reality. Against this it is argued throughout the book that realism can combine a strong definition of social reality with an anti-foundational approach to knowledge. The position of realist anti-foundationalism that is argued for is developed and defended via the use of immanent critiques. These deal primarily with post-Wittgensteinian positions that seek to define knowledge and social reality in terms of ‘rule-following practices’ within different ‘forms of life’ and ‘language games’. Specifically, the argument engages with Rorty’s neo-pragmatism and the structuration theory of Giddens. The philosophy of Popper is also drawn upon in a critically appreciative way. While the positions of Rorty and Giddens seek to deflate the claims of ‘grand theory’, albeit in different ways, they both end up with definitive claims about knowledge and reality that preclude social research. By avoiding the general deflationary approach that relies on reference to ‘practices’, realism is able to combine a strong social ontology with an anti-foundational epistemology, and thus act as an underlabourer for empirical research.
