Have heard about or read the classical book by Sun Tzu, called The Art of War? If so, this book will prove far more thoughtprovoking than the original. The book turns Sun Tzu upon his head and shows how The Art of War is based on a specific form of thinking that can never fulfill your true, longterm goals. Instead, it will keep you trapped in a dualistic struggle that will eventually exhaust you and leave you empty. What is the alternative to the dualistic struggle? It is to understand the characteristics and limitations of the dualistic mind, so that you can transcend this form of thinking and reconnect to your own higher being. Only then will you know what you truly desire in life and only then will you find true fulfillment and inner peace. The book takes the original verses from the Art of Nonwar and comments on them, for each showing the limitations of dualistic thinking. Yet The Art of Nonwar also goes far beyond by giving a clearer and more accessible explanation of duality and nonduality than can be found anywhere else. This book is primarily about how you can find personal, inner peace, but by demonstrating the way beyond the dualistic struggle the cause of all war the book also makes a profound contribution to the debate about world peace. After reading this book, it will become clear why there can be no world peace until a critical mass of people understand the dualistic mindset and how it distorts every aspect of society. And this can then turn you into a true ambassador to peace, as you will be empowered to expose this mindset wherever you encounter it.The Art of Nonwar is truly an example of classical philosophy expressed in the straightforward and clear language that appeals to modern people. It is a modern classic. Author: Michaels, Kim Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 232 Publication Date: 2011/09/11 Language: English Dimensions: 7.99 x 5.24 x 0.49 inches

A ‘Best Kept Secret’ of literature: this is a canonical work that should be read by every school child as a superior example of English literature and the epitomy of the written Enlish language. ‘Kim’ is a wonderful story of an orphan in India (the part that is now Pakistan) in the late 1800s. Kim is the son of an Irish soldier raised by locals, familiar with the customs and languages of the Hindus and Muslims of the area who gets recruited by the British to spy for them. Kim acts as a guide for a Tibetan Buddhist priest who is on a quest in India, broadening his knowledge of the cultures of his world and giving him an excuse to travel even further. He comes upon his father’s regiment, and the officers of the regiment arrange for Kim to attend a ‘proper’ British school. Throughout the story, a British spymaster is helping Kim receive an education (both formal and in the skills needed to serve the British rule in India) and arranging for Kim to carry messages and run small but important tasks for him. Throughout the book, the only Indian group that is treated with disrespect is Hindus who have sacrificed their own culture’s customs in order to get ahead in the British goverment. Frequently, the low opinion of the British held by the Indians (Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist) is mentioned, and is usually pretty funny. The other European powers that are mention in the book are not treated with respect, but that is understandable in context. Kipling’s passion for the land he was raised in and his love for the peoples he was raised with is unmistakable, as is his love/hate relationship with the British government (N.B. he was not knighted in a time when most prominent authors were; he was entirely too candid about the British rule in India and the Crown’s treatment of her soldiers). The language of the book is a little hard to follow, between regional loan words and the English of the time, but a patient and persistant reader will find the effort rewarded. A great spy novel, read it for yourself and don’t trust the critics who speak based on assumptions rather than knowledge.

Korea is home to one of the longest and richest traditions in the world–yet it is one of the least known in the United States. San Francisco's Asian Art Museum was a pioneering advocate for bringing Korean art into this country. One of the first museums in the United States to have a gallery solely dedicated to Korean art, it has built up a remarkable collection of more than 750 objects spanning millennia of Korean culture in a variety of mediums.More than 100 highlights of the collection are included here, along with detailed commentaries by Kumja Paik Kim, the museum's emeritus curator of Korean art, which together compose an accessible introduction to Korean art and culture. Dr. Kim has also contributed an essay that constitutes one of the most helpful overviews of Korean art currently available.

The photographs of In Sook Kim (born 1969 in South Korea) examine how we give meaning to the rooms we live in, how we use furniture, decor, television, computers, sex, alcohol and pharmaceuticals in our futile attempts to fill inner voids–and how those rooms reflect these voids back at us. Kim’s Edward Hopper-esque settings are constructed with a loving attention to detail, and lit with an eerie glow, so that they function as deliberately artificial mini-theatres in which human subjects seem intrusive or uneasy, perhaps imprisoned by society’s designation of Saturday night as party night. These works were recently exhibited at New York’s Gana Art Gallery, to much acclaim.

my dog ate part of my edible art project for school and was baking chocolate, what should I do?
which left some 15 minutes …. is about 40-50 pounds and ate half of one of the peices of the baking chocolate boxes …. Veterinarian will be good or not *
It will be very good, in fact I know that pet owners feed their dogs chocolate occasionally. This is literally a poison to them, as they say. Although this should not be fed to them in my opinion. A bit of chocolate used to hurt. If you see signs that concern you. Bring to a veterinarian to be sure.

Faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, more powerful than a locomotive — well, that’s Superman for you. But now there’s Art Dog — a new superhero on the block — and he’s fighting crime with a paintbrush and an unstoppable creative might. Just as Superman and Batman lead quiet lives during the day as Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, Art Dog spends his days as Arthur Dog, a mild-mannered guard at the Dogopolis Museum of Art. But under the light of a full moon, he undergoes a transformation into a creative force to be reckoned with. Through a little creativity and an astounding nose for art he manages to sniff out and apprehend a band of thieves who have stolen the priceless Mona Woofa. Highlighted with characteristically bright and bold illustrations, Thacher Hurd has created an action-packed story that offers a whimsical view of many artistic masterpieces. Littering the pages of "Art Dog" are canine interpretations of paintings such as Wood’s "American Gothic," Matisse’s "Dance of Life" and "Jazz," Vermeer’s "Girl with Turban," Seurat’s "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," da Vinci’s "Mona Lisa" and others. Children will recognize some of the paintings and will delight in the dogs replacing their human counterparts. Oh, no Someone has stolen the Mona Woofa from the Dogopolis Museum of Art and the police don’t even realize that they are barking up the wrong tree when they collar their number one suspect. So it’s up to Art Dog, the mysterious, masked painter who roams the streets of Dogopolis, to find the missing masterpiece. Zip Splash Smoosh He paints himself a Brushmobile, and he’s off–on a wild and funny chase to capture the dastardly crooks. With the same deft touches of high-spirited fun and adventure that have made "Mystery on the Docks" and "Mama Don’t Allow" (both Reading Rainbow Featured Selections) such perennially popular stories, Thacher Hurd serves up a new action-packed tale that will delight young readers. 1996 ‘Pick of the Lists’ (ABA) Children’s Choices for 1997 (IRA/CBC) 1998 Red Clover Book Award (VT) Oh, no Someone has stolen the Mona Woofa from the Dogopolis Museum of Art and the police don’t even realize that they are barking up the wrong tree when they collar their number one suspect. Zdenek Sykora Czech abstract painter, dies at 91 Zdenek Sykora abstract Czech painter, a pioneer in the use of computers in art, dies at 91 years how to draw paint an abstract art city
In this original and provocative book, Fer explores new ways to think about abstract art and the problems of interpretation it raises. She speculates on the kind of language required to describe the often tantalizing effects of kev abstract paintings and sculptures and on ways to discuss critical issues when a work of art is without "subject matter".

Children ages 5 to 9 are introduced to a series of Abstract paintings. The name, or title, of each painting is given to the young reader as well as the meaning behind each title.
Clyfford Still (1904-1980), best known for his compelling abstract works with jagged fields and powerful expanses of color, stands among the giants of post-World War II art. Together with his peers Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman, Still helped shape the new vision of art that came to be called Abstract Expressionism. This vividly illustrated book presents more than thirty of Still’s greatest works, paintings that represent the full flowering of his style. The contributors to this volume explore various aspects of Still’s art, his accomplishments, and the Abstract Expressionism movement. David Anfam presents an overview of Still’s career from the 1930s through 1950s. Brooks Adams examines Still’s artistic legacy and influence on succeeding generations of artists. And Neal Benezra’s chapter focuses on a provocative, unexplored element of Still’s studio practice: his habit of painting replicas of many of his own works.
Howard Hodgkin (b. 1932) is among the most important artists working in Britain today. Nominally abstract, his paintings are, in his words, "representational pictures of emotional situations." Sumptuously illustrated, this book presents a selection of Hodgkin’s paintings from the last fifteen years and provides a critical coda to the most recent retrospective publications on this artist’s work. Essays by Richard Morphet and Anthony Lane bring together personal responses to Hodgkin’s work of the last fifteen years (with special reference to works in the exhibition at Yale and Cambridge); accounts of the development of his art in the preceding decades; observations on the artist’s relationship between his personal circumstances and his art; and discussion of some of the links between Hodgkin’s vision and the work of selected other artists in England, continental Europe, and the United States.
American abstract painter Suzan Frecon (born 1941) is known for her monumental and balanced nonrepresentational works, in which geometric proportion and a keen attention to color yield deeply satisfying compositions. In 2007′s "Embodiment of Red, Version 1," for example, two curved forms hug the horizons of the canvas’s bottom and equator, describing four regions in various vibrant oxide tones. "I always craved geometric solutions," she has said. "They underlie so many things: architecture and old paintings that are informed by geometry, like Cimabue, Romanesque cathedrals, churches. You have the structure of the building and then you have the curves of the architecture and then within that you have the painting and within that you have the art." In recent years, Frecon has had a major solo exhibition at the Menil Collection in Houston and work included in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. This volume presents her most recent oil paintings.
Joan Mitchell (1926-1992) was one of the few women among the first-rank Abstract Expressionist painters. She outpaced all but a handful of her male mentors and counterparts, while only Lee Krasner stands as a possible rival among her female counterparts. Although well regarded by critics, fellow artists, and the general public, Mitchell’s achievement has never received full recognition; her work has not been shown in New York for more than twenty-five years. This exquisitely illustrated volume and the exhibition that it accompanies restore the artist to her rightful place in the history of American painting. Spanning Mitchell’s entire career, from early works of 1951 until the year of her death, "The Paintings of Joan Mitchell "includes a wealth of breathtaking paintings, both intimate and grand in scale, that reveal Mitchell’s fierce dedication to her art and reflect both the struggles and the artistic triumphs she achieved with her distinctive vision of Abstract Expressionism. Jane Livingston draws on the artist’s personal papers, including her journals and extensive correspondence, to provide an illuminating interpretation of the artist and her work. Linda Nochlin, who was a friend of Mitchell, discusses the artist’s experience working in a field dominated by men. A third text by Whitney Curator Yvette Lee explores a distinctive and little-known suite of paintings entitled "La Grande Vallee, "created in 1983-84. Mounted with the full cooperation of the estate of Joan Mitchell, the exhibition contains many paintings rarely seen before–and in some cases never publicly exhibited. This book includes an exhibition history; an extensive artist bibliography of related monographs, reviews, and filmed interviews; and color plates and listing of all the works appearing in the exhibition.
Vibrant paintings of daylight and moonlight landscapes, figures, and still lifes captivate the eye and spirit in the first publication of Roz Jacobs’ work. Covering 10 years during which she began serious exploration of time and memory, many of the paintings in this volume were made in southwestern France. As this rural area has been changing for the past 20 years, Jacobs has been capturing in paint the eternal qualities of the light, air and landscape that attracted the Impressionists and Fauves before her. Grounded in European tradition, she brings her unique tactile approach, creating lush semi-abstract paintings. The paintings reflect a deep understanding of light, space, and composition and are a feast for the senses.Roz Jacobs’ recently collaborated with Laurie Weisman to create The Memory Project, a multimedia installation that explores the relationship between loss, memory and the creative process. Jacobs’ mother, a Holocaust survivor, narrates the art installation with riveting testimony about her brother and their attempt to escape from the Warsaw Ghetto. The Memory Project is currently touring museums in the US and internationally. Memory Project installation photos together with photos of Jacobs painting accentuate the point that the title of this volume makes-that Jacobs invites the viewer into her process. Jacobs studied with the late Norman Raeben at his Carnegie Hall studio from 1973-1978. Raeben, the youngest son of Sholom Alechem, studied with George Luks and Robert Henri, members of the Ashcan School. Jacobs has also written screenplays, designed sets and written books for children. She resides in NYC and part of the year in southwestern France.(Includes 48 color plates)
While most people find their inspiring vistas at hilltops and roadside overlooks, painter Jane McNichol often heads for the lowlands. Her minimalist, near abstract canvasses, writes a reviewer, give us a sense of infinite openness, of clear, clean, newly oxygenated horizons such as might have occurred or existed at the birth of the world. The images collected here are a selection of paintings and monoprints that Jane McNichol has made over the last 15 years. Drawn to the deep flat spaces of the midwest, discovered on a crosscountry trip with artist friends, she arrived at her current style with the painting Lakeland (1992). Since that time, she has sought to reduce the elements of the landscapes she observes to the bare minimum. Explains how abstract art originated and evolved, discusses major abstract artists and movements, and looks at the current revival of abstract painting.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Abstract illusionism, a name coined by Louis K. Meisel, is an artistic movement that came into prominence in the United States during the mid 1970s. Works consisted of both hard-edge and expressionistic abstract painting styles that employed the use of perspective, artificial light sources, and cast shadows to achieve the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Abstract Illusionism differed from traditional Trompe L’oeil (fool the eye) art in that the pictorial space seemed to project in front of, or away from, the canvas surface, as opposed to receding into the picture plane as in traditional painting. Primarily, though, these were abstract paintings, as opposed to the realism of Trompe L’oeil. Pre-1970 forerunners and practitioners of the style include Ronald Davis, Alan D’arcangelo, and Al Held
While teaching at the Pratt Institute of Art, New York and at Bennington College, Vermont in the late 50s and early 60s, Tony Smith turned his attention toward developing a geometric language expressed through sculpture. During the same time, his most creative period, he translated this language into two dimensions, using painting as a medium through which to examine the interplay between space and form. Many of the paintings included herein have never before been published. Contemporary abstract artist Richard Tuttle, once an assistant to Smith, offers an insider’s view into the late artist’s work.
German artist Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) is widely regarded as one of the most important painters at work today. His diverse body of work has been exhibited at major institutions worldwide and in 2001, he was given a solo retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Cage Paintings, conceived as a single coherent group and first displayed at the Venice Biennale in 2007, pay homage to the American avant-garde composer John Cage (1912-1992), who famously declared "I have nothing to say and I’m saying it." Richter, equally suspicious of ideologies, shies away from giving psychological interpretations of his paintings, preferring to allow viewers and critics to make up their own minds. In this strikingly illustrated volume, critic Robert Storr considers the importance of The Cage Paintings within Richter’s practice and within the wider context of abstract art. A series of extraordinary photographs document the development of each of these monumental canvases, giving unique insight into Richter’s artistic approach.
A radical new generation of American abstract painters has emerged in the twenty-first century. Whereas their predecessors advanced abstraction in the shadow of the Cold War, this new generation arose at the cusp of the transition to the digital era and is marked by the traumatic events surrounding 9/11 and its ongoing social and political aftermath. In these shifting times the artist’s alter ego might well be the DJ–brushstrokes are replaced by "riffs" while "old school" palettes are discarded for "Teletubby purple" or "bubble gum pink." This is the age of "the remix" where raw material is downloaded and "Photoshopped." Contemporary artists have irony at their disposal and switch to tie-dye aesthetics or psychedelia as fast as they can quote Malevich. This next wave is thrilling. Painted loops, reminiscent of Jackson Pollock, are revealed to be motorcycle skid marks–bringing new meaning to Abstract Expressionism. Even though traditions are "deconstructed" and paintings can echo "grunge," historical continuity remains. As Max Henry writes in his introduction, "The American Dream does not exist any more. It is itself an abstraction." Abstract America is being published in conjunction with the opening of one of today’s most important institutions collecting and exhibiting contemporary art–the new Saatchi Gallery in London.

The central character of Abstract Reality, Zack Lee, investigates three cases which are shrouded in mystery and entwined with paranormal twists. Abstract Reality is a sequel to the author’s first novel, The Walk-In. The photo on the front cover features a snapshot by the author, taken some years ago, to document the occurrence of a paranormal event. At this time, she was in the habit of leaving this necklace arranged in the shape of a rectangle on the dresser in her bedroom. One morning her daughter, Lee, entered the room and commented on the necklace, which was resting in its usual shape. The two of them then left the room and returned moments later. During their brief absence, much to their astonishment and shock, the necklace on the dresser had been "rearranged" to form the intricate, cursive "d" that you see on the cover. This incident marked the beginning of a lifetime of unexplained happenings for the author. She has drawn on these phenomena to embellish the plot of Abstract Reality. The author challenges her readers to discern actual events from abstract reality. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sandy Harrington lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. She studied English and Fine Art in college before becoming actively involved in the age of enlightenment, working as a professional psychic for more than ten years. Sandy’s paintings have won special recognition in international competitions. Two of her works, "God’s Search and Rescue" and Daffodil," are on display at www.periodgallery.com. Her short story, "Dogs Do Go to Heaven," is featured in Brad & Sherry Steiger’s book, Pet Miracles.
The illustrious Bay Area figurative artists emerged in the mid-fifties and attained national acclaim by the early sixties. Their improvisational compositions and the perceptually derived canvases of the East Coast realists marked the regeneration of representational painting at the height of Abstract Expressionism and Greenbergian Formalism. Theophilus Brown first achieved national attention more than a half century ago with his ‘football’ paintings, but the visual and thematic character of this work began to crystallize when he moved to Berkeley and enrolled in the graduate studio program at the University of California. Always a figurative painter, Brown’s aesthetic sensibility was formed through his post-war contact with Picasso, Braque, Giacometti, and others in Paris; the influence of Willem de Koonig’s mentoring in New York; and his heady rapport with David Park, Elmer Bischoff, Richard Diebenkorn, Paul Wonner, James Weeks, and Nathan Oliviera in Berkeley. Today this close knit and highly influential group, known here and abroad as the Bay Area figurative painters, has attained legendary status in twentieth century American art.
Filled with inspired instruction, this detailed guide shows how to compose dramatic, beautiful, thought-provoking, and evocative abstract paintings. Providing background information about the artistic style, the procedures and aims of the abstract method are explored in depth. This manual also teaches where to find inspiration, how to develop ideas, the way to create lively effects, and how to apply a range of techniques on different surfaces, whether it be transparent watercolor or thickly applied acrylics. While focusing on the goal of developing the creativity and self-expression inherent in each individual, the approach is unique in that there are no step-by-step instructions.
"What is abstract art good for? What’s the use–for us as individuals, or for any society–of pictures of nothing, of paintings and sculptures or prints or drawings that do not seem to show anything except themselves?" In this invigorating account of abstract art since Jackson Pollock, eminent art historian Kirk Varnedoe, the former chief curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, asks these and other questions as he frankly confronts the uncertainties we may have about the nonrepresentational art produced in the last five decades. He makes a compelling argument for its history and value, much as E. H. Gombrich tackled representation fifty years ago in "Art and Illusion," another landmark A. W. Mellon Lectures volume. Realizing that these lectures might be his final work, Varnedoe conceived of them as a statement of his faith in modern art and as the culminating example of his lucidly pragmatic and philosophical approach to art history. He delivered the lectures, edited and reproduced here with their illustrations, to overflowing crowds at the National Gallery of Art in Washington in the spring of 2003, just months before his death. With brilliance, passion, and humor, Varnedoe addresses the skeptical attitudes and misunderstandings that we often bring to our experience of abstract art. Resisting grand generalizations, he makes a deliberate and scholarly case for abstraction–showing us that more than just pure looking is necessary to understand the self-made symbolic language of abstract art. Proceeding decade by decade, he brings alive the history and biography that inform the art while also challenging the received wisdom about distinctions between abstraction and representation, modernism and postmodernism, and minimalism and pop. The result is a fascinating and ultimately moving tour through a half century of abstract art, concluding with an unforgettable description of one of Varnedoe’s favorite works.

Lorrie Bortner’s work invokes a calming and settled response. A graceful moment where time stands still. All forms of life created, live in harmony. People, animals, even trees happily seem to watch our world as they slowly float by. Viewed by us in greater glory of innocent beauty for their trouble. It is a place of rounded edges and cool tones. Rich with deep colors. The eyes, leaves, animals and people smoothly flow and allow us to float along with them like a dream but hauntingly close to an experience one calls back from a real or imagined past. -Thomas J. Johnson Painter and printmaker Lorrie’s art are reflections of her self. Reflecting her personality, full of life, color and pure love. Her art refreshes your soul, makes you smile, always fun. You always feel pure love. Sweet Lorrie. -Lydia Garcia Santera Lorrie Bortner’s work is fresh and delightful. It is a reflection of who she is, which is very rare in these days of assumptions and pretensions. While her work shows a directness and may seem almost childlike, which is a feat in itself, her vision and knowledge is anything but. Bortner tells a mythological story or broaches upon a topic she deems important to her, yet it is never propagandistic. It always comes down to aesthetics in the end, which in my opinion is what art is about. We are lucky Lorrie chooses to be real and honest, for through her truthfulness we get rich, colorful, fun and astute paintings. -Brenda Euwer Abstract painter It’s easy to see why so many people are drawn to Lorrie’s work. The bold colors and playful images create a world of color and life that enables us to travel, getting lost in the thoughts that the images create. The colors and images are inmotion and they mesmerize, as if reminding us of a vision, or a dream we once had. Her work can be whimsical, yet powerful and bold, brave enough to address women’s issues, and yet whimsical enough to invoke the joys of a childhood too soon forgotten. -Carmela Duran Museum Coordinator Millicent Rogers Museum Taos, New Mexico Lorrie paints with great focus and determination, has an original vision and can render subjects of great complexity with remarkable simplicity and forcefulness: she is, in fact, a natural heir to the early expressionists. -Geoffrey Baker Professor Emeritus of Art Maharishi University of Management Lorrie was born in Philadelphia in 1955. As a child she lived in New Jersey, Chicago and New York. She always wanted to be an artist. Her early memories are of museum visits with her family to the museums in New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia. As an adult she obtained an MFA in painting and an MA in education. Painting, creating murals and inspiring and teaching children the arts are her passion. She has received grants and community funding to create over 16 murals with New Mexico youth, thereby teaching the youth teamwork, creative thinking, artistic design and community service. Lorrie has also taught fabric painting, recycled sculpture and co
Dramatic Comedy Characters: 6 male, 3 female Unit Set After a scathing review 15 years ago, a once-celebrated painter faded into impoverished obscurity. Can one chance encounter resurrect this volatile artist from obscurity and re-launch him to overnight success? Theresa Rebeck skillfully compares the gritty urban realities of lives lived on the edge with the capricious intrigues of the uptown gallery scene where fame might just be a matter of who you know and reputations can be bought and sold. "Ms. Rebeck writes passionlessly about passion, colorlessly about art, self-importantly about the poor, tritely about the rich, humorlessly about the ludicrousness of art as commerce." -The New York Times "Meaningful questions of morality, aesthetics and class conflict." -The Seattle Times"Underneath her satirical surface, equal to the best of Richard Brinsley Sheridan in The School for Scandal, Rebeck rekindles the troubling assertion that it was the support of the political, financial and artistic establishment that made possible the triumph of absract expressionist paintings and transferred the capital of the art world from Paris to New York." -New Haven Register
